Alpha Hall

Alpha Hall“mesmerising, with dusky vocals, purring violin, and a rich melodic and rhythmic interplay that erupts into emotional climaxes that ambush and satisfy in equal measures” – Doug Wallen, The Big Issue

Alpha Hall traverse a unique sonic landscape, somewhere between The National’s brooding songcraft and Dirty Three’s violin-streaked majesty. Their cinematic debut album, Omens, conveys many shades of light and dark, veering from delicate and introspective to unnerving and expansive. It captures a band able to convey not only the rugged beauty of their surroundings in regional Australia, but also the complex nature of our tempestuous times.

Omens

Omens conveys many shades of light and dark, veering from delicate and introspective to unnerving and expansive. It captures a band able to convey not only the rugged beauty of their surroundings in regional Australia, but also the complex nature of our tempestuous times. Alpha Hall tap into a lineage of Australian artists such as Roland S. Howard, Died Pretty and The Triffids, whose gritty approach and lack of concern for contemporary trends creates a time-ravaged feel.

Album opener ‘Find’ immediately establishes Alpha Hall’s sound, as raw vocals and overdriven acoustic guitar are chased by soaring violin lines. Aching first single ‘Rains’, a love song for the lost, exerts a devastating emotional pull, while the driving ‘Filament’ immediately feels like an indie-rock classic, its chorus bursting out of the gates and laying waste to everything in its path. Heartbreaking finale ‘Trees’ brings the album to a fittingly atmospheric close with its restrained vocals and haunting violin. Regardless of where Omens ventures, Alpha Hall are consistently in command of their songcraft.

Biography

Formed in 2016 by Bozhin Petrovski (vox, guitars) and Adam Menegazzo (violin), with Sy Young (drums) and Perry Lane (bass), Alpha Hall have created a formidable sound in a short time. Based in regional Victoria, Alpha Hall take their name from an early gold rush cinema – apt for a band seeking to bridge the past with the present. Written and recorded in Talbot during late 2017 and completed in early 2018 with friend Heath McCurdy (Epicure, Mark With The Sea) in Ballarat, their debut album, Omens, captures something purposeful and persuasive, far from the city lights and hipster sprawl of Melbourne’s musical hub.

  • Alpha Hall ‘Rains’ Single & Video

Alpha HallHidden Shoal is excited to present ‘Rains’ is the aching first single from Omens, the debut album by Australian band Alpha Hall. The track is available via SoundCloud and Bandcamp and the accompanying music video can be streamed via YouTube. Omens drops on the 12th of October 2018.

A plea for love in the face of fear, ‘Rains’ exerts a devastating emotional pull. Layers of guitar and violin interweave beautifully, while the rhythm section ratchets up the tension and Baz Petrovski’s weathered vocal tone deepens the atmosphere of weary resilience.

  • Alpha Hall “Omens” Reviewed at Forte

“Ballarat’s own Alpha Hall have made landing with the release of their debut album, Omens – a hypnotic album with psychedelic and mesmerising tracks. It’s not easy to put a label on Alpha Hall’s music genre, but it would probably be something along the lines of adult contemporary, a mixed bag of soft rock, blues, pop and easy listening.

Opening up for the album, ‘Find’ is a gritty visually invoking song that ranges from mellow and peaceful to loud and powerful. The rough husky voice of the lead vocalist and his synergy with the rest of the band give this song the strong impact it needs as the opening track.

One of the tracks that stood out for me personally was ‘Salt’, a slow paced emotionally driven ballad that expresses a beautiful sadness and a sense of solitude. Violin and voice working together to send shivers down my spine. A beautiful track to be appreciated.

Throughout the album you will find seven solid tracks, ranging from pretty standard rock/pop tracks, to slowed down beautiful ballads and psychedelic sensations. Alpha Hall’s debut album is quality from start to finish, showcasing a unique combination of instruments and influences, a testament to the value of synergy between band members.”

  • Alpha Hall “Omens” Reviewed at Half-Life Music

“Alpha Hall are from the same Hidden Shoal stable as Kramies and Summon The Birds. They’ve been described as a cross between The National and The Dirty Three. It’s not a bad description. There’s a certain understated Matt Berninger manner to the vocals, particularly on songs like ‘Salt‘ and ‘Trees’, while the manic violin playing is reminiscent of Warren Ellis in madcap mode, which, in fairness, is most of the time. But Alpha Hall deserve their own reference point not an amalgam of other people’s. Because Omens is a really impressive debut. The riffs can sometimes be big and the melodies are always mellifluous. And all the time there’s the background scraping of the violin to keep the sound slightly but nicely off-kilter. The result is that they sound like Alpha Hall and no-one else. And that’s the highest compliment of all. Check out Omens. It’s a good one.”
