Apricot Rail's Debut Album Released

Hidden Shoal Recordings are proud to announce the release of the debut self-titled album by Perth-based multi-instrumental pop quintet Apricot Rail.

Apricot Rail produce some of the most discretely charming, lush instrumental pop music you’re likely to hear all year. Delicate, bell-like arpeggiated guitars weave around snaking clarinet and flute, while the beautifully held back yet sanguine rhythm section drives the whole thing into a blurred, sun-soaked horizon.

Their debut album features the wonderfully received single ‘Pouring Milk Out The Window’, an anthem without ever having to be anthemic, a melancholic reverie that never resorts to the emotional ease of sadness. ‘If You Can’t Join Them, Beat Them’, which featured on the 2009 Spunk Singles Club compilation album, is another chiming standout. And gorgeous closing track ‘Halfway House’ weaves in bubbling electronics as the band lead the listener through glowing landscapes and light-drenched vistas.

“this shyly retiring gem is predisposed to a seductive spectral / ethereal head bowed beauty much reminiscent of the Grails in more tender moments.” – Losing Today on ‘Pouring Milk Out The Window’

Apricot Rail’s self-titled debut hits the streets on the 4th of July, released through Hidden Shoal Recordings. The album is distributed in Australia through Hidden Shoal Distribution and internationally via n5Mailorder. The album is also be available digitally through the Hidden Shoal Store and all good third-party digital music stores (iTunes, eMusic, Amazon etc). Check the Hidden Shoal Store for all availability info. The album will be launched at Mojos Bar in Fremantle on the night of the release in what promises to be one of the gigs of the year as Apricot Rail share the stage with local legends Pond who’ll be launching their new album on the same night.

Tangled Star's Craig Hallsworth In-Store Performance at 78 Records

In support of Tangled Star‘s recently released That Time EP through Hidden Shoal the band’s frontman Craig Hallsworth will be performing in-store at 78 Records (awesome Perth music store for you non perth folk) this Saturday at 1pm. Be sure to head down and soak in the man that Dave Cutbush has called “one of the most underrated West Australian songwriters of all time.”.

That Time is Tangled Star’s third EP through Hidden Shoal and features the stunning single ‘seabirdtown’. The single has received lots of radio and press love and is indicative of That Time’s strengths as a louder, more flowing version of the melodic, evocative spaces of Tangled Star’s twilight pop songs.

“…blessed with an acute ability to have you all at once marvelling aglow in subdued awe at the spectacle of their delicately calibrated caress like airy drift pop while simultaneously drawing you low amid the affecting undertow of bruised hurt.” – Losing Today

Tangled Star features the inimitable talents of Perth musical luminaries Craig Hallsworth (The Slow Beings, Outstation, Bamboos), Lorne Clements (The Slow Beings, A Minor Ache, Bing, Chimpy) and Jim Butterworth (Outstation).

The EP is available digitally through all good digital stores including the Hidden Shoal store and on CD through n5Mailorder and all good Perth music stores.

Hidden Shoal Announces Down Review Signing

Hidden Shoal Recordings today announced the signing of electronica duo Down Review to its roster of artists.

Acclaimed electronic producers Medard Fischer (Arc Lab) and Tim Arndt (Near The Parenthesis) have never been in the same room nor even spoken. But from their online musical collaboration comes Down Review, melding their unique sensibilities to create a delicious hybrid – warm, human electronica for alienating times.

Down Review’s initial collaboration was featured on Near the Parenthesis’ album Of Soft Construction (n5MD, 2007). Their work on the track ‘Sitting in a Room’ was clearly a departure from the typical NTP aesthetic, situating Medard’s drum-programming wizardry and signature basslines beneath Arndt’s more ethereal creations. The result was arguably the album’s stand-out track, which “rather anomalously adds bass-heavy funkiness to the sparkling flow” (Textura).

Down Review’s debut EP From Here, For Anyone is to be released by Hidden Shoal on 11th August, preceded by the single ‘Anything is Everything’ on 9th July.

Read a full press release here and listen to a sneak preview of the upcoming single ‘Anything is Everything’ on Down Review’s Myspace page.
